Hi class! I'm Steve Hausmann, your instructor this summer. A little about me: I'm a historian of the American West, Native American/U.S. relations and the environment. In particular, I'm interested in the ways people have revered landscapes such as the Black Hills of South Dakota and how that changed the way they interacted with the environment. I come to Temple by way of Vermont (where I did my undergraduate and graduate work) and Colorado (where I'm standing in the windy high Rockies above). One reason - maybe the main reason - why I love teaching, learning and talking about history is that it forces me out of my comfort zone. I like to say that history is an act of empathy. Even if you think someone in the past held disgusting, retrograde views you disagree strongly with, a rigorous study of history forces you to think of them as complex individuals who made decisions based on their surroundings. History makes us consider other perspectives before making a judgement and tells us that every event has dozens, if not hundreds, of competing narratives and perspectives. The world in its infinite complexity is revealed through studying history, and any historical question asked should lead to more additional questions than answers. I hope this semester provides you with more questions than you have coming in - if so, I'll consider my work here a success!

My name is Craig way and I am a Community Development major. This major is in a department that was recently moved from the College of Liberal Arts to Tyler School of Art. I am a senior and this is my last class before applying for graduation. I was born in Pottstown, lived in Montana for over a decade, and am back in Pottstown. I intend on staying in the Greater Philadelphia Area, but if heading back out west, Portland OR is of interest due to its progressive land-use policies. Philly's green infrastructure plans are a step in the right direction.

Hi Craig and Emilia, nice to hear from you both.
I realize now that posting images to this board isn't necessarily intuitive so let me provide a brief overview for you and anyone else who wants to post a picture:
First, you're going to have to upload the image to a third party hosting site, unfortunately. I like to use Tinypic.com (though I suggest turning on an adblocker of some kind since these sites tend to have lots of annoying ads all over them). From there, upload your image - you will probably have to adjust the size, Tinypic has as "message board" size option I suggest using.
Once the image is uploaded, copy the link provided under "Direct Link." Head back over to the thread you'd like to post in, hit reply and above the text box click "insert image" (it's the 7th button from the right). Paste the link into the box that pops up and you're good to go. Hope that helps.

Hi everyone, I'm Joe Petonak a sophomore at Temple. I'm from Harrisburg pa and a business major. I plan on opening a garage that specializes in car customization and restoration. Working on cars has always been a passion for me and I currently have one project car (89 Mustang GT) that I'm working on and a daily driver that I have customized to my liking (13 Wrangler). I plan on using the business degree to open and manage the garage in the most effective and profitable way.

Hello everyone! My name is Dan. I just finished my junior year as a neuroscience major at TU in CLA. I am originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia, but live in the city now and really enjoy it. I like to produce music, play tennis, and eat at as many new restaurants as I can! Despite those leisure activities, I love the brain. I love learning about it, doing relevant research, and also greatly enjoy psychology. Anyway, I am highly looking forward to beginning this course, and reading and reacting to all the input about the material!

Greetings all... My name is Michael, I'm a senior at TU. I'm a biological anthro major & poli sci minor (maybe double major). I'm originally from Baltimore, but have been living in Philly for a little over 5 years. I'm old as shit. Well not exactly but I took a 25 year hiatus from academia and look forward to finishing this round of it. I dig the outdoors and travelling, I studied in Leipzig, Germany last summer - a fantastic experience, especially since my fiance is German. I spent an additional month travelling around the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, and Germany. I highly recommend investigating as many cultures as you can add onto your bucket lists - it's invaluable to our perceptions of the increasingly globalized world in which we live. Caio for now...

Hi everyone. My name is Benjamin Weaver and I am a music education major here at Temple who will be a senior in the fall. I am currently in Philadelphia but will be traveling between the city and the suburbs, because of this, an online class is perfect. The only history classes that I have taken since high school have been music history classes. While I love studying, teaching, and performing music, this will be a nice change of pace from always seeing music notes and composers' names. I look forward to beginning the class with all of you!

Hellooo everyone! My name is Kelly Steckler. I am an anthropology major with a concentration in archaeology. I am also minoring in French and getting a certificate in Italian. This is the last course I have to do before I graduate so woo! I love love love history. Within archaeology I have focused on the beginning of settlements in western Europe and Central and South America. I have also studied American military culture/history so I really like it all. It seems this class will provide some good discussions, can't wait!
